Nearly 50 people participate in July 7 Floating Classroom aboard Hiawatha on geology and history

Nearly 50 people joined the first Floating Classroom of the 2026 season aboard the Hiawatha Paddleboat near Williamsport. 

The theme of the July 7 cruise, geological history of the Susquehanna River, included presentations by Central PA Rock and Mineral Club president Andrew Rockhound and club vice president Gunner Kuhn.

Rockhound discussed the history of key geological features of the river and impacts ... looking at specifics like Jack's Mountain and its significance locally and abroad via the PA Glass and Sand Company. 

Meanwhile, Kuhn presented on the upper level about the basics of rock-hounding, what tools are necessary, safety and an overview of some of the main rocks that can be found in the region.
